The television is one of the most popular electronics used across the globe. Most homes in modern society are equipped with a TV that can be used by anybody. Although the technology has advances a lot in the last decades the principle on which the TV technology is built has not changes. This means that an old TV and a new one work in the same way. The difference between them is the quality of the visual and audio signal. In order to understand how does a television work you need to go beyond the complex electronic devices inside it. By simplifying things you will have an easier time understanding. When a camera is recording it is capturing a picture by breaking the image into a series of pixels. These pixels are very small and appear like tiny dots across the width of the picture. The pixels are organized into strings and each string creates a line of the image. The number of these dots differ according to the quality of the signal. High definition images for example have 1920 dots per line and 1080 per column. The more pixels a picture has the more clear it is going to be.

As the camera captures each dot it also records the amount of red, green and blue light. These numbers are sent as a continuous stream of information until the whole picture has been sent. Then the camera proceeds to capture the next image. Every second the camera records up to 30 pictures and because our eye is not strong enough to see each image individually the TV creates the illusion of movement. When the TV receives the data it decodes it and gives each pixel brightness according to the level of the three colors.

This is the principle that explains how does a television work. However each type of TV has added technologies that contribute to the quality of the picture. The Cathode-Ray Tube is the most basic type of TV. At the narrow end of the tube there is an ion gun that shoots charged particles of electricity. Using electromagnets the particles hit the screen lighting up the phosphors and creating the image. This technology has been surpassed by the plasma screen which was eventually surpassed by the LED TV.
